Posted in Class Work on April 12, 2010 by kiidumaeOK, last project for Design Essentials…. where did the time go? I’m a little dissapointed with my effort on this one – could have gone a lot further with the concept, but next time… I’ve been documenting music performances that I’ve been involved with lately. I wanted to make a compilation of these images which gave an idea of the creative, unscripted, energy which is generated at these events. Because the photos themselves are highly abstracted/distorted to begin with, I realized there was little need to modify/add to them – even though indesign offers such amazing opprotunities to do so. Next time…Night Hearts and Music Lovers
Poster Project
Posted in Class Work on March 20, 2010 by kiidumaeOK, so my “poster” ended up being a road sign – or at least in a road sign format – which I thought was kind of fun. As you can tell from my previous project, I’ve had these kinds of communicative signposts on the brain lately. The format apeals to my interest in art which encompasses an element of humor or playfullness, which may not be immediately obvious at first glance, but reveals itself after a moment. For me, humor, or cleverness, is a such a powerfull tool to employ when communicating a message. Using a minimal, focused amount of information or content to quickly and clearly grab someones attention and relay a message (and hopefully generate a smile) – that’s how I wanted to approach this project.
I would like to “plant” my poster in a variety of places. My photo documentation of the poster includes a doctored version using photoshop, as well as a real life placement. I would deffinately like to reproduce the poster on a stiff backing of some kind, which would allow me to quickly and easily slap it up practically anywhere – signposts, buildings, etc. First thing’s first though, I have an InDesign project to do.

Here’s the final verson of my Panorama project. Pretty happy with it over all – the print quality and sizes the doc can handle is amazing – I plan on spending some money there. My print job came out darker than I would like, but that will improve with practice – the screen is always brighter than the printed page.

Comfort is good. Too much comfort is bad.

I don’t find it strange that all you want to believe is only that which comforts you. How else do humans invent the traps which betray us into mediocrity? How else do we define cowardice? To exist is to stand out, away from the background. You aren’t really thinking or existing unless you’re willing to risk even your own sanity in the judgement of your existance.” – The Preacher, from “Children of Dune”
More than an Ego Booster?

Right, first off, I’m the last off the blocks for this blog – just managed to add myself to the Digital Imaging Essentials class a couple of days ago – thanks to the exceedingly gracious and generous Suzi. I’m very gratefull and excited to get in on it, looks very good. This is my first attempt at a blog and it’s already late and I’ve got work tomorrow, so I’ll just leave you with the question in the title for now. Can a blog be more than an ego booster? I have the impression that most people who blog do so because they enjoy the “attention” – the idea that the general populace is interested in whatever it is they do/say/think. Granted, a blog is really intended as a sort of digital diary, but traditional diaries weren’t expected to hold up to the scrutiny of the public. Then again, perhaps the public is generally nosey – we desire to get a peak into someone’s personal thoughts. In which case, it would seem that blogs could be a magnet for ego maniacs and vouyers.
But I’m actually not such a synic -I’m just tired. I think the potential of the medium is enormous. The sharing and seeking out of personal ideas and information are very worthwhile pursuits. In the end, I’m sure it’s the same old story as with any technology/human nature scenario – the technology is rarely “positive” or “negative”, but simply a “tool” which we as humans choose to use. How we use it and what it’s capable of depends on our intentions.
